While you might be wondering how we take a traditionally “breaded” snack food and make it low-carb, you’ll be satisfied to know that each bite only has about 5 grams of net carbs per serving.
How? We substitute almond flour and mozzarella cheese for traditional dough ingredients, which cuts out carbs and adds nutrients like fiber, protein, and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids into the mix.
Oh, and we use full-sized hot dogs for this recipe.

Pigs in a blanket are a fun way to describe a popular finger food served at many cocktail parties and events.
Small hot dogs or Vienna sausages are typically cooked inside of a biscuit or croissant dough, then served with ketchup, mustard, or other dipping sauces.
Interestingly, pigs in a blanket are a traditional food or appetizer served in many countries—however, they slightly change everywhere you go. For example, Russian pigs in a blanket are typically served with sauerkraut either inside the dough or on the side.
How this Recipe Cuts the Carbs in the “Blanket”
As you may know, traditional dough recipes are not keto.
That’s why you don’t hear about many low-carb pigs in a blanket recipes—because one bite-sized piece typically has about 6g of carbs in it.
That hardly qualifies as a “finger food” .
However, our version of the “blanket” is much more keto-friendly. Instead of all-purpose wheat flour, we use almond flour, mozzarella cheese, eggs, and spices.
The end result is a fluffy dough that wraps perfectly around each hot dog without ruining your carb count for the day.
Instead of flour and a bunch of empty calories, you get plenty of healthy fats, proteins, and even some fiber from the almonds.
The best part is we’ve got an array of low-carb and keto-friendly dipping sauces you can pair with your pigs in a blanket.
Low-Carb Dipping Sauces that Go Well
- Low-Carb BBQ Sauce: This one’s easy to make and delicious. It’s our personal favorite dipping sauce for these pigs in a blanket.
- Yellow Mustard: This classic condiment works well alone or with ketchup.
- Sugar-Free Ketchup: Most grocery stores now carry at least one version of this. You can also order online if you can’t find it!
- Hot Sauce: If you want a spicy kick, try any of the following keto-friendly options: Sriracha, Frank’s RedHot Original Sauce, Tabasco

Low-Carb Pigs in a Blanket Recipe

- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1½ cup blanched almond flour
- 2 eggs
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 8 all-beef Kosher hot dogs
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
- In a microwave-safe mixing bowl, add the shredded mozzarella. Microwave on high for 30-60 seconds or until the mozzarella melts.
- Add in the almond flour, eggs, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Feel free to add other seasonings here if you’d like.
- Mix well until it forms a dough-like consistency.
- Place the dough on the parchment paper. Split the dough into 16 equal balls.*
- Cut each hot dog in half.
- Roll out each piece of dough into an oval and wrap it around a hot dog. Repeat for the other 15 pieces.
- Bake for 18-22 minutes. You can broil the last 2 minutes if you’d like, but keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.
- Serve hot with your favorite low-carb dipping sauce or condiment.
