What descriptors come to mind when you think of biscuits and gravy?

For us, it's terms like 'comfort food' and 'Southern classic.’

But if we're honest, phrases like 'unhealthy' and 'high in calories' also come to mind, too.

That's because by and large, most biscuits and gravy recipes aren't that good for you. They're packed with starches, high in calories, and void of any real nutritional benefits.

(Trust us: you aren't the first person to think about taking a mid-morning nap after eating biscuits and gravy.)

But that's where this keto biscuits and gravy recipe zigs where others zag. Okay sure, it's a bit "heavier" than having a few eggs for breakfast would be.

But one serving is totally reasonable in terms of calories. And it's not like the calories you're eating are empty, either.

Instead, you're getting several healthy fat and protein sources combined into one delicious, healthy, and satisfying breakfast recipe.

Why You Should Try This Keto Biscuits and Sausage Gravy Recipe

Here are 3 reasons you should go with this recipe over others, and a few benefits you stand to gain from making these keto biscuits and gravy.

1. It's not made with a traditional flour-based recipe. This is how a classic Southern comfort dish becomes a keto-friendly breakfast option.

There are only one-third of the carbs in this recipe compared to one biscuit with gravy from Denny's [1].

And when you factor in fiber, this recipe only has 5 grams of net carbs. (That's roughly the same as an avocado [2]).

2. Many of the ingredients are good for you. Instead of eating a bunch of "empty" calories, you're eating wholesome, satisfying keto-friendly foods like almonds, sausage, cheese, eggs, and butter.

As you'll see in the next section, many of these ingredients are packed with macronutrients and micronutrients that offer awesome health benefits.

3. Yummy comfort food is worth it every now and then. Maybe you're thinking, "I can just have my easy keto breakfast of eggs and a low-carb veggie. Why should I try this?"

One reason could be that long-term success with any diet comes from eating foods you genuinely enjoy. You might like your eggs, but it's good to stretch your boundaries every once in a while and reward yourself with something you like.

If biscuits and gravy are a comfort food to you (or you just think they sound awesome), you won't find a more keto-friendly recipe than this one. In short, you get the best of both worlds.

And if you're still on the fence, consider these health benefits.

Top 3 Health Benefits of This Recipe

You won't find any other recipes boasting these types of benefits.

1. Packed with protein

Unlike traditional biscuits and gravy, three ingredients in this recipe (the eggs, sausage, and almond flour) are all packed with protein. And together, they provide 13 grams of protein per serving.

While fat is the primary macronutrient in this dish (and if you're on keto, it should be), there's still about 10% of your daily protein needs in one serving.

Dietary protein, as you may know, is especially beneficial for weight loss and body transformation because it helps you add lean muscle and curbs hunger cravings [3][4].

2. High in fiber

Almonds are also packed with fiber, an essential nutrient that promotes gut health [5].

Your gut is home to billions of tiny bacteria—some good, some bad [6]. When you eat a fiber-rich diet, the healthy bacteria stay well-fed and thriving. This keeps you from getting sick and can also help you fight off certain diseases [7].

Fiber, like protein, has also been shown to support weight loss because it can help you feel satisfied for longer after meals [8].

3. Rich in collagen

The gravy portion of the recipe calls for a half cup of bone broth, which is packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

One of those nutrients is collagen, which is the building block 75% of your body is made up of [9].

A collagen-rich diet helps improve skin health, wards off signs of aging, and strengthens bodily tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments [10].

Bet you didn't think that'd be something you could ever get from eating biscuits and gravy.

Keto biscuits and gravy

  • Biscuits:
  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 2½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons grass-fed unsalted butter, diced*
  • 4 ounces full-fat mozzarella or cheddar, shredded
  • 2 eggs
  • Gravy:
  • ½ pound Italian pork sausage
  • 4 ounces full-fat cream cheese
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup chicken or beef bone broth
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients (almond flour, baking powder, salt).
  3. Using a fork, cut in the butter cubes until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Mix in the heavy cream, a couple tablespoons at a time.
  5. Beat the eggs and add to the mixture.
  6. Add the cheese and mix until it forms a dough.
  7. Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces and form into a ball. Spread evenly across the sheet pan and bake 18-20 minutes. (Biscuits can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, or wrapped tightly and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.)
  8. While biscuits are in the oven, heat up a saucepan and brown the sausage until cooked through.
  9. Add the cream cheese, heavy cream, and broth. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. (Feel free to add other herbs and spices if you’d like!)
  10. Lower the heat to a simmer. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy has thickened, 7-10 minutes.
  11. For serving, split open one warm biscuit and spoon ¼ cup of sausage gravy over it.
